News / Lerwick and Sandwick bars apply for World Cup late licences
TWO LERWICK pubs and the Sandwick Social Club could join Lerwick Legion in showing Scotland’s World Cup matches, if extended licences are approved.
The Marlex and Thule bars have both applied for licences to stay open until 4am on the morning of Sunday 14 June to show Scotland’s first game back at a World Cup since 1998, against Haiti in Boston.
They have also applied for extended licences until 2am on Saturday 20 and Thursday 25 June for the group games against Morocco – also in Boston – and Brazil, which will take place in Miami.
Both bars said their events would be ticketed.
The Sandwick Social Club has applied for late licences for the same times and dates, but has not said that those events will be ticketed.
Scotland’s match against Haiti kicks off at 2am local time, while the two later games are 11pm kick-offs in the UK.
The Lerwick Legion successfully applied last month for a licence until 4am to show the Haiti match in its function room.
After the licence was granted license board chairman councillor Neil Pearson referred to a famous Scotland football team slogan and said: “No Legion, no party”.
The extended licences will come to the Shetland area licensing board for approval on Monday 27 April at 10am.
