Community / Crowdfunding page opened for campaign to keep Lunna Kirk in the community

AN ONLINE donations page has now been launched by the group looking to save the oldest working church in Shetland.

The Lunna Kirk Preservation Group’s crowdfunding page can be found here.

The historic building is in line to be sold by the Church of Scotland as the kirk continues to reduce its estate in Shetland.

Dating back to the 11th century, the Lunna Kirk’s historic significance goes far beyond the boundaries of the Lunnasting parish, mainly due to its close association with the Shetland Bus wartime operation.

The Church of Scotland has already agreed to delay the next stage of the sale process until spring to allow the preservation group time to put together a business plan.

Recently a pudding day was held at the nearby Lunna House, which managed to raise nearly £900 for the cause.

The kirk announced in 2018 that it would be closing around two thirds of its churches in Shetland to make its operations more sustainable.

One of the more recent churches to go up for sale was the Tingwall Kirk, which also has a big history.

The building, which had an asking price of at least £55,000, is now under offer.
