Letters / Reduction in car use needed

Linked to earlier letters, articles, opinion pieces about EVs, and the recent council debate (?) by councillors, other than a major de-plastification of Shetland (mostly imported food packaging for/from supermarkets/food shops/take-aways) a major reduction in car use is required.

Challenge of reaching net zero target spelled out to councillors

This would require a switch to locally produced hydrogen fuelled buses, but also car share, car clubs and a significant expansion of public transport and feeder buses to the extremities.

A complete ban on driving into Lerwick – park and ride – as mentioned by me and indeed Mr Tinkler, and a proper town bus service, two each running clockwise and anti-clockwise around the town continuously from 06.00 to 23.00, to include Gulberwick.

Imagine also the reduced pressures inter-island ferries, saving car costs and fuel.

Only one problem: how to change behaviours!

Oh, we can’t have that, can we? Council officers and elected members will have to set the example.

James J Paton
Lerwick
