Sustainable Shetland invites residents to have their say on energy projects

SUSTAINABLE SHETLAND, the anti-wind farm group that has campaigned against the Viking project for almost 20 years, is inviting residents to have their say on the current and proposed energy developments across the isles.

Following the recent merger of Save Shetland and Sustainable Shetland, the newly formed group says a questionnaire provides a fair and accessible way for residents to register their views.

Every residential address in Shetland will receive a questionnaire in the post this coming week, but the survey will also be available online.

It comes as community councils prepare for a convention later this month which is expected to call for a moratorium on all energy developments until a national plan has been drawn up.

A spokesperson for the group said: “We believe it is an important democratic principle to hear the views of people across Shetland, particularly at a time when there is increasing discussion about a possible moratorium until the wider, long-term cumulative impacts of current and proposed developments can be properly understood and a proper energy strategy is agreed.

“Many people feel that consultations on individual projects amount to little more than a tick-box exercise.

“This survey is different. It gives people across Shetland an opportunity to consider the bigger picture and express their views, wherever they live, because these developments affect the islands as a whole.”

The anonymous survey opens today and runs until 6 September, and it is open to anyone aged 14 or over.  It does not ask for or collect any personal information.
