Food and drink organisation nets funding for fish market opening event
SHETLAND Food and Drink has received £5,000 in funding to put towards plans for an event marking the opening of the new Lerwick fish market.
Manager Claire White said Shetland Food and Drink is currently in talks with partner organisations about a launch event at the market.
A total of 21 projects are sharing £95,550 from the Scottish Government’s Connect Local Regional Food Fund, which aims to promote locally sourced food and drink.
Lerwick Port Authority is overseeing the creation of the new £7.5 million Lerwick fish market, which is being built adjacent to Mair’s Pier and is due to open in spring.
Port authority chief executive Calum Grains said: “We are currently considering options to mark the opening of the new fish market and are having discussions with Shetland Food and Drink on potential ideas.”
He added that the existing market would initially be maintained as a back-up to the new one.
Grains said there are “no plans to use this for other purposes”.
