News / Fireball takes off
THE SHETLAND Fireball Championships got eventually under way on Friday after organisers were forced to cancel all races the previous day due to fog.
The local event acts as a warm up for the 2014 Fireball European Championships; which has attracted sailing boats from the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Ireland as well as the UK mainland.
A total of 27 boats will participate in the races over five sailing days from Sunday to Friday.
The fleet will depart from the wooden boat deck at the small boat harbour, at Lerwick, and race in Brei Wick in the south harbour.
Lerwick Port Authority chief executive Sandra Laurenson said: “It is splendid that this international sailing event has returned to Lerwick after 11 years.
“A number of local sailors have kept the links alive by competing internationally and they have worked hard to arrange a week of both racing and social events and we wish them every success with the championships.”
