Letters / Opinion: Mike Mackenzie – wrong again!
Shetland Islands Council political leader Gary Robinson responds to MSP Mike Mackenzie’s latest contribution to the local education debate (Opinion: alternative approach to education; SN, 21/07/14).
It’s hugely disappointing that someone in Mike Mackenzie’s position chooses to launch what is now his fourth public attack on Shetland Islands Council without even having bothered to speak to me once on his chosen subject. Following his last misinformed assault I offered to meet him in person. Privately he agreed to that but I’m still waiting.
What’s equally disappointing is that he chooses to re-state figures, which, as I’ve already explained to him, are wrong.
He points to local policy being the impetus for change in education when, in fact, the most significant reason is the legislative duty put upon the council to provide quality education and best value.
While proclaiming an “alternative approach to education” he then goes on to endorse the status quo.
He quotes Grant Assisted Expenditure (GAE), but fails to mention that Shetland Islands Council supplements this by millions of pounds every year from community funds – and will continue to do so within the Medium Term Financial Plan.
While the MSP from Argyll hasn’t found time to speak to me he has spoken to the Cabinet Secretary for Education who, he says, agrees with his point of view.
Since Mr Mackenzie appears willing to grant an audience to his own MSP – the cabinet secretary, then perhaps he can put a couple of questions to him on my behalf.
Firstly, if the status quo is Mr Mackenzie’s (and presumably his government’s?) policy for education in Shetland – when will the Scottish Government fully fund it as required by the European Charter of Local Self-Government to which they’re signed up?
Secondly, will the MSP seek an exemption from Best Value legislation in respect of education on behalf of the Shetland Islands Council?
My door remains open, if you can find the time…
