News / Jailed for six years over multiple assaults

A MAN WHO assaulted four women and a man over a 17 year period at addresses in Caithness and Shetland has been jailed for six years.

Gary Thomson, 42, attacked his victims on various occasions between 1 February 1996 and 1 March 2013.

Thomson, who lived in Wick and in Whiteness, Shetland, was convicted of serious assault charges following a hearing at the High Court in Aberdeen last month. His victims cannot be named for legal reasons.

Sentence had been deferred on Thomson, a prisoner at HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow, in order for the court to obtain reports about his character.

Lord Bannatyne handed down the sentence when Thomson appeared at the High Court in Edinburgh on Tuesday. He also ordered that Thomson should be supervised by the authorities for three years following his release from prison.
