News / Dickson and Noakes date
VETERAN folkies Barbara Dickson and Rab Noakes will be bringing their blend of traditional songs, classic pop and self-penned favourites to Mareel in June.
The pair have been friends since they were teenagers, singing and playing in venues around Scotland.
As separate acts, they have often found themselves performing alongside each other, and other musical luminaries – creating a lifetime bond.
Both have established diverse solo careers, garnering praise and winning awards in the process.
Dickson and Noakes have sung on each other’s records and occasionally performed live together over the course of a friendship stretching more than 40 years.
Dickson progressed from her folk scene roots to mainstream chart success with hits including I Know Him So Well.
She is Scotland’s best-selling female album artist and has earned six platinum, 11 gold and seven silver albums. She was awarded an OBE in 2002 for services to music and drama.
Noakes, meanwhile, has enjoyed a varied and illustrious musical career. A former member of Stealers Wheel (best known for their song Stuck in the Middle With You), he has written songs for Lindisfarne and regularly appeared on iconic shows including John Peel and the Old Grey Whistle Test.
The concert will take place on 8 June in Mareel’s main auditorium, with tickets going on sale at the end of this week.
Shetland Arts marketing officer Lisa Ward said: “Rab’s continuing reputation as one of Scotland’s finest singer-songwriters and Barbara’s skills as an interpreter of new and traditional songs provide an enviable platform for this unique concert. We expect it will be very popular!”
