Letters / ‘Government bully’
Mr Carmichael’s three years as a government whip have got their due reward; a promotion to the cabinet. (Carmichael promoted to become Scottish secretary; SN, 07/10/13)
The whip’s job is as the government bully, the enforcer who makes MPs vote for the policy no matter how offensive to other MPs’ conscience.
No one should be under any illusions about the smoke screen that Mr Carmichael has spun about his previous role in government.
Yes Shetland challenge the Scottish secretary to debate in his words “about people’s livelihoods, about the strength of our economy, about the security of their jobs”.
He can try to defend the bedroom tax, tax cuts for the already rich, attacks on benefits, privatisation of the Royal Mail with the obvious dangers to the postal service in Shetland, and at a sell off share price that vastly undervalues a profitable public service.
All this in a country where food banks have become the norm! Yes, the Scottish secretary can try to defend that record!
