News / Six month ban for speeding
A YOUNG Shetland man was fined £500 and banned for six months after admitting driving carelessly at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour on 22 February this year.
Lerwick Sheriff Court heard that this was George Hobbin’s third conviction for careless driving since 2005.
It took police “some time … travelling a significant distance” to catch up with the 24 year old joiner from Bridge of Walls.
In court in Wednesday, Hobbin admitted driving carelessly at excessive speeds on the B9074 Trondra to Scalloway road, the A970 Scalloway to Brig O’ Fitch road, the A970 road to Tingwall and on the A971 Tingwall to Bixter road.
Defending, Gregor Kelly said he was fully aware that Hobbin came to court with baggage, and conceded that his client appeared “to be maturing a little too late”.
The court heard that Hobbin was to move to Aberdeen next month to start an oil and gas industry apprenticeship.
Sheriff Philipp Mann told Hobbins that he should regard himself as lucky to be able to plead guilty to a careless driving offence rather than one of dangerous driving, which carries an automatic disqualification period and the requirement to re-sit the driving test.
