News / SIBC’s Ian Anderson honoured
THE VOICE of local commercial radio station SIBC, Ian Anderson, has been honoured as one of 40 radio pioneers across the UK who have made a “significant contribution to the growth and success” of commercial radio.
As the industry marks its 40th anniversary this week, Anderson has been to London to participate in the celebrations.
Different to the station’s routine, the news were read by Anderson’s wife Inga Walterson on Thursday morning.
The couple own and operate Shetland Islands Broadcasting Company, which began broadcasting at 96.2 FM in November 1987.
Anderson was previously a broadcaster for the BBC and Radio Forth, as well as pirate radio stations including Radio Atlantis, Radio Northsea International and Radio Caroline.
Anderson said: “I am enormously pleased for all of us who were chosen. The awards are not just for our daily work in radio over the years but for the varied contributions to the whole commercial radio industry in making it happen.
“In addition, as I realised on meeting them again at the awards, they are all really nice people, at least most of the time.”
Others on the Roll of Honour were industry luminaries including Chris Tarrant OBE, Christian O’Connell and Chris Evans.
Industry veteran and chairman of the deciding committee, Paul Brown, said: “We all enjoyed a splendid walk down memory lane – a real privilege and a reminder of the fun we all had in our various commercial radio roles.
“We considered so many talented and influential people and have ended up with a powerful 40 that reflect a fascinating 40 years.”
