THIS year’s Walls regatta is hoping to attract a fleet of competitors by offering the best cash prizes ever awarded in a Shetland sailing competition.
The regatta is celebrating the re-launch of its ‘Round Foula’ yacht race with a £500 prize from Shetland Mussels Ltd for the first yacht to sail from Walls around Foula and back on Saturday 13 July.
The same day will see a £200 prize from Seaspray (Shetland) Ltd awarded to the best boat over three Shetland Maids races.
The best performing dinghy over three races on Sunday 14 July will receive a £100 prize sponsored by Margaret and Doug Forrest.
The Walls Regatta Club started life in 1895, but in recent years the number of boats has declined.
The club hopes that the sponsorships will attract at least the minimum of five boats needed for each race.
Commodore Jim Tait said he hoped the cash prizes might encourage some older skippers to get afloat and start sailing again and bring some new sailors to the regatta.
“Sailing is an excellent sport, ideally suited to Shetland where we have fantastic natural facilities, the envy of many other areas of the UK where they have larger and well supported sailing clubs,” he said.
