News / Darling to launch Better Together Shetland
FORMER Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling will be in Shetland at the weekend to help launch the local group campaigning for Scotland to remain part of the UK.
The chairman of the Better Together campaign will speak in the Lerwick town hall on Saturday at 1pm.
Darling said that there was strong support in Shetland for Scotland remaining part of the UK; with a recent Press & Journal poll suggesting only eight per cent of people living in the northern isles would vote for independence.
“Like the majority across Scotland, people in Shetland strongly support Scotland remaining part of the UK. Working together and pooling our resources across the whole of the British Isles means we can share the benefits and spread the burdens.
“I look forward to making a positive case for Scotland staying in the UK and hearing from local people in Shetland,” he said.
Maurice Mullay of the Better Together Shetland campaign added: “We know there is strong local support for our campaign and, even prior to the official launch, we’ve had a really positive response.
“However, we’re certainly not being complacent. We need everyone in Shetland who wants Scotland to stay within the United Kingdom to get involved in the campaign, and the launch event is a great way to learn how to do that.”
