News / Back to jail
A POLISH man who assaulted a female drinking partner in her Lerwick flat was jailed for two months at the town’s sheriff court on Thursday.
The court heard that 35 year old Marcin Olejniczak had a serious alcohol problem that turned him from a “highly articulate and intelligent man into the polar opposite” when he was drunk.
On 19 January an argument about food broke out with the woman who had taken him in after his release from jail last year for spitting at a bus conductor and swearing at court officers while drunk.
Olejniczak repeatedly punched the woman leaving her with head injuries and a scar.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said as soon as he realised what he had done, he called an ambulance and did his best to comfort the woman until it arrived.
“Mr Olejniczak when sober is a very pleasant gentleman to deal with, when he has been drinking that’s not the case at all,” Allan said.
He added that his client, whose address was given as Aberdeen prison, wanted to start a new life in Aberdeen as he realised that living in Shetland led him to drink, which was behind all his offending.
“He has nowhere to stay, so he ends up with acquaintances who have been on the same path as he is and it’s very difficult for him to stay away from drink,” he said.
Sheriff Marion McDonald ordered him to be supervised for five months on his release from prison.
“You assaulted someone who was good enough to give you a home after your release from prison and did that while on licence,” she said.
