TRADING standards officers in Shetland are warning local folk to beware doorstep callers offering roof treatments and other home improvements and repairs.
Team leader David Marsh said they had been contacted this week by a local householder concerned about the lack of contact information on one such trader’s paperwork.
“If things go wrong, it can be very difficult to get them sorted out if the trader is no longer in Shetland – and virtually impossible if you’ve no way of contacting them,” Marsh warned.
By law sales people must provide information about cancellation rights, he said.
“All too often, though, rogue traders turn up at folk’s homes causing stress, worry and havoc for some of our most vulnerable householders and then disappear without leaving so much as a name or address.
“Our advice is that if you need work doing, ask friends and neighbours for recommendations of reputable trades people and get a written quote from more than one before deciding to have any expensive home improvements done.”
The council is offering free window stickers telling uninvited sales people they are not wanted from their Grantfield offices.
People can be sent a pack by phoning 01595 744887.
