News / Dope dealing mother jailed
A YOUNG Lerwick mother has been sent to jail for almost five months after she admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis and amphetamine between October 2010 and February 2012.
Lesley Anne MacLean, of 14 Browns Road, had pled guilty to two charges of supplying the class B drug at an earlier hearing and appeared before Lerwick Sheriff Court for sentencing on Wednesday.
Despite pleas by defence solicitor Tommy Allan to spare the 29 year old a prison term, Sheriff Philip Mann said he had no alternative but to impose a short custodial sentence.
Mr Allan described his client as “exemplary” in her conduct during the preparation of the case and said she had done all she could to improve her life.
He added MacLean had stopped using alcohol, had found work on her own initiative and had got back the custody for her son.
“She has moved on and is providing for herself. There are good reasons why a custodial sentence is not inevitable,” the solicitor said.
But Sheriff Mann said MacLean was guilty to two charges of supplying a Class B drug over an extended period and he could see no alternative to sending her to jail.
Sentencing her to 19 weeks in prison he added: “I regret to say that I don’t see any alternative to custody. It is nothing I like to do.”
