Letters / Keep the museum open
Are these councillors having a brain storm or similar? To even think about closing the museum is totally reckless.
Most Shetlanders will have a connection one way or the other within the walls of the museum whether it be a photograph or painting that belonged to there forefathers.
Shetland’s history is in the building, the tourists spend hours, even days looking around.
I am a born and bred Shetlander, my forefathers came to Shetland in the late 1700s brought to Shetland by Hay and Co, one a tin smith, another a cooper and one a ship’s carpenter. My family history is in the museum; how many more Shetlanders are in the same boat.
Tourists have traced their roots back to Shetland by visiting the museum. Throughout the summer and even the winter there are days you can hardly get in, it must be one of the most popular attractions in Shetland. It is sited in a wonderful area where you can have a cup of tea and watch the world go by.
This council is no better than the last lot; they can’t wait to hand out millions to Viking Energy who will destroy Shetland as we know it.
Stop the hand outs to Viking and keep the museum open.
