Campaign groups merge in mission to challenge large energy projects
This is one of the most encouraging advances of recent times in relation to the energy debate, both locally in Shetland and also nationally.
The knowledge that has been built up separately in both groups over an extensive number of years is invaluable and combined will be even more powerful.
Similar groups throughout Scotland, and beyond, use Shetland’s experience to guide their campaigns against the dominance of SSEN and other developers, and to tailor their campaigns to suit their particular circumstances.
There is little doubt, following the evidence of the devastating negative impact of Viking over its existence, that the majority of Shetland’s communities will be supportive of action to minimise further devastation for no local gain; either societal, economic, or environmental; and to remove SSEN and other developers’ dominance over Shetland.
Fingers crossed that the committed activists won’t have to fight for too much longer before wisdom prevails and the folly of large scale renewables controlled by institutional investors who own the transnational developers such as SSEN will be told to go away and destroy their own back yards.
