SIC convener pays tribute to Simpson’s ‘exceptional contribution to Shetland’
ELECTED members paid tribute to the late Josie Simpson at a meeting of the full Shetland Islands Council this morning (Thursday).
Simpson died in March aged 88 after a distinguished career in local politics.
He was the SIC’s first political leader, while he was a former chairman of the Shetland Fishermen’s Association.
At Thursday’s meeting SIC convener Bryan Peterson said Simpson had made an “exceptional contribution to Shetland”, while calling him a “highly respected advocate for fishing communities”.
The convener said Simpson served in the council with “distinction” from 2002 to 2012.
He added that the list of council positions he held was “several pages long”.
Peterson also said Simpson was known for “bringing calmness, clarity and a strong sense of duty to public service”.
He continued by saying his name is still spoken regularly by councillors with “great respect and warmth”.
