News / SIC reaches out
A SHETLAND Islands Council delegation will be in Inverness on Wednesday to improve relationships with neighbouring local authorities.
In last year’s Accounts Commission report the SIC was also criticised for being insular and not actively seeking contact with mainland councils.
Chief executive Alistair Buchan said the visit to Highland Council was part of the improvement programme.
“The Accounts Commission made the point last year that this council has to actively seek to make better connections within the local government environment, so this is an ideal chance for some of our senior political figures to meet with their Highland counterparts to exchange experiences and share ideas,” he said.
The five-strong SIC team consists of Mr Buchan, executive manager of performance and improvement John Smith, political leader Josie Simpson, social services chairman Cecil Smith and environment and transport vice chairman Allan Wishart.
Mr Simpson said that councils acting together could pay enormous dividends, as in the successful campaign to retain coastguard cover had demonstrated.
