Election / Greens report vandalism of election sign to police
THE LOCAL Greens say they have reported the apparent vandalism of one of their election signs in Lerwick to the police.
The sign at the top of Sound Brae appears to have been covered in grey paint.
It forms part of the Greens’ ‘A to Z’ signage which runs from the south entrance to Lerwick to near the Clickimin. The hand-painted sign in question says ‘A is for Autonomy’.
Local Green candidate Alex Armitage said members will replace the sign soon.
He said it was “disappointing to say the least” to see the sign daubed in paint.
“It’s sad – it feels like this is something you come to expect with elections in 2026,” Armitage said.
“I know there are lots of high feelings in this election campaign, but this is just vandalism and I have reported it to the police. I don’t think we can stand for this kind of behaviour, I think it’s quite cowardly.
“I’d rather people come and speak to me or send me a message if they want to have a discussion about policies that I’m standing for.”
The candidate said the “reason why we have politics is so that we can peacefully discuss all of these issues within the law”.
It is unclear when it may happened, but it was seen on Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday members of the party protested Reform UK leader Nigel Farage’s visit to Lerwick.
The full list of confirmed Shetland candidates for the election on 7 May, in alphabetical order, are as follows: Alex Armitage (Greens), Douglas Barnett (Conservatives), Vic Currie (Reform UK), John Erskine (Labour), Hannah Mary Goodlad (SNP), Emma Macdonald (Liberal Democrats), Brian Nugent (Alliance to Liberate Scotland), Peter Tait (independent).
