Politics / First minister proposes rent freeze in bid to tackle cost of living crisis

SCOTTISH first minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced plans for a freeze on private and social rents over the winter to help people with the cost of living.

The government will shortly introduce emergency legislation to freeze rents to at least the end of March.

There will also be a moratorium on evictions over the winter.

“The Scottish Government does not have the power to stop your energy bills soaring, but we can and will take action to ensure your rent does not rise,” Sturgeon said.

The Scottish Association of Landlords however said the government is “attacking landlords for political reasons”.

The Scottish Government has also announced plans to increase the Scottish Child Payment for families on benefits from £20 to £25 per week from November.

It came as part of latest Programme for Government, which looks ahead to the next year.

The announcement was made on the same day new Tory leader Liz Truss was formally put in place as UK prime minister.
