Weather / Council says extra care is needed on the roads

SHETLAND Islands Council is reminding folk to take extra care on the roads as wintry conditions and sub-zero temperatures over night are set to continue.

Executive manager for roads Dave Coupe said: “In the next few days, freezing conditions are expected to continue across Shetland.  Road surface temperatures are forecast to drop overnight to as low as minus eight degrees Celsius in some places.

“At these low temperatures and with the current reduced traffic volume on the roads, road salt cannot be guaranteed to keep the carriageways clear of ice.

“During this particularly cold spell, we’d ask anyone travelling on the roads to take extra care.”

A detailed weather forecast for a number of locations across Shetland can be found at our weather pages at: https://www.shetnews.co.uk/weather/

Information on the temperature and surface state of roads at Gulberwick, Sandness, Toft and Unst can be found on the council website.
