Emergency services / Bomb disposal team carry out controlled explosion
OFFICERS from the Northern Diving Group based at HM Naval Base Clyde carried out a controlled explosion of a war time bomb at Scatsta Airport on Saturday.
The bomb disposal team were called in to help after contractors for Scottish Water had found the bomb when they were laying new mains on Thursday.
Prior to being an oil industry airport, Scatsta was an RAF airfield during the Second World War.
A spokesman for the Northern Diving Group said pipes bombs had commonly been buried in the ground around airfields ready to be detonated in case of a German invasion.
Most of these bombs at Scatsta were neutralised by Royal Engineers about 25 years ago.
