Features / ‘Thought-provoking’ exhibition is open
AN EXHIBITION from a local artist which explores the connections between three generations of women went on display on Monday as part of a national festival.
Clair Aldington is hosting ‘We think back through our mothers…’ Or do we? at the Lodberrie Traders opposite Bain’s Beach until Saturday (22 October).
It forms part of the nationwide “creative ageing festival” Luminate, which takes place throughout October across Scotland.
The exhibition stems from questions and objects she sent to her mother and maternal grandmother in 2010 as part of a new creative project.
The work was left unfinished because Aldington’s grandmother never responded in time. After the relative passed away in 2013, the artist found the box of objects and discovered that her gran had begun to respond.
With a visual art and craft award from Shetland Arts, Aldington began to develop her work earlier this year alongside her mother.
The exhibition features four themes – home, place, mend and plant – while it also includes pieces like labyrinths, nesting dolls, video projections and creative writing.
Anne Gallacher, director of Luminate, said Aldington’s exhibition is “beautiful and thought-provoking”.
“The relationships that exist across the generations are important in all our families, and Clair and her mother, Margaret Aldington, will share work that explores the importance of those intergenerational connections,” she said.
- The exhibition will be open between 12pm and 4pm from Monday to Saturday, except on Wednesday when it will be closed.
