News / Danny’s four half marathons in memory of best friend
A YOUNG man from Shetland’s North Mainland has vowed to run four half marathons before the autumn in support of a charity that was set up in memory of his best childhood friend.
Danny Sandison, who now lives and works in Aberdeen, is running in memory of Fabian Richardson, who died from diabetes in September 2005 aged just 12.
He completed the Peterhead half marathon in June and is preparing for his next race in Perth this weekend.
Fabian died when they were both still boys due to complications after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
The FAB fund has since raised more than £16,000 for Diabetes UK, and the 23-year old now hopes to add to its total.
“I am doing these races for Fabian to honour his memory. We were looking forward to growing up together and Diabetes robbed us of this,” he said.
“By raising awareness of Diabetes it will hopefully avoid similar tragedies.
“Calling it Four4Fab, I am looking to raise £500 for the fund. This is quite a tough challenge for me completing four half marathons in such a short space of time.”
Following the Touch of Tartan half marathon in Perth on Saturday (13 August), Danny has signed up for the Scottish half marathon in Edinburgh on 18 September, and the Great Scottish half marathon in Glasgow two weeks later.
He finished the 13 miles in Peterhead in two hours and 18 minutes – a time he hopes to improve upon this weekend.
“My next race is on a mix of grass, trail and road racing,” he said. “I am aiming to beat my time from Peterhead and I feel this should be achievable.”
