News / Jailed for lying to police

A GLASGOW man with a history of offending was jailed for six months at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Friday after he twice gave false information to the police in Shetland.

Officers initially stopped Paul Francis Shields, of 16 Ailsa Road, Coatbridge, on 2 June as he came off the NorthLink ferry at Lerwick’s Holmsgarth terminal on suspicion of carrying drugs.

At the time he gave a false name and date of birth, information to which he stuck when officers visited him at an address in Tingwall on 23 June.

The 29 year old had been due to appear in court in September, but when he failed to turn up he was arrested and escorted to Shetland.

On Friday he pled guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice and honorary sheriff Sandy Cluness jailed him for six months due to his previous criminal record.
