A LERWICK man has been told to “start acting like a reasonable human being” after he admitted shoplifting booze before challenging his friends to a fight and brandishing a bottle.
Trevor Couper, of 37 Cairnfield Road, appeared from custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Thursday to admit stealing a total of 44 bottles of alcopops from Tesco on the town’s Sea Road on 21 August while on bail.
The 22 year old also admitted uttering threats of violence towards two people at an address in Lerwick’s St Magnus Street on the same day, before challenging them to a fight, brandishing a bottle at them and shouting and swearing.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said that Couper acted “belligerently” as he attended a social gathering in town following the shoplifting spree at Tesco.
The mood turned sour after a bottle ended up getting smashed, with a drunk Couper then challenging his peers.
He was restrained and thrown out of the house. Defence agent Tommy Allan said that shoplifting was not in his client’s nature and that “being in the company of other people” on the day influenced him.
Sheriff Philip Mann told Couper that he had been a “pain in the side of the court for some considerable time” and told him to grow up and “keep off the drink”.
However the sheriff deferred sentence on the matter until 29 October to give Couper an opportunity to be of good behaviour and bailed him on the condition he stays at an address outside of Lerwick between 7pm-7am, seven days a week.

Meanwhile, a 54 year old man from Lerwick was fined following a trial at the court on Thursday for assaulting a teenage girl.
Raymond Tulloch, of 31 Hoofields, was fined £150 after being found guilty of striking the female on the head and pushing her at an address in town on 1 January.
He was also fined £300 for behaving in a threatening or abusive manner towards another woman at a Lerwick address on 1 January and 5 February.
