Community / Bookbug sessions helped ‘overwhelmed’ mother of twins after lockdown

A SHETLAND mother has praised the Bookbug team at Shetland Library for their support to her and her twins, who were born during the Covid lockdown.

Kathryn Gordon, who works for Shetland Arts, said the sessions made her feel less “overwhelmed” whenever she left the house with her children, who are now five years old.

Bookbug Week is taking place from 18 and 24 May and celebrates the popular early years programme, which provides free song and rhyme sessions in libraries across Scotland.

Kathryn Gordon’s twins enjoy a look around a library van.

Bookbug sessions having been running at Shetland Library since the programme was launched by Scottish Book Trust in 2010.

Led by Chloe Tallack, sessions are held every Tuesday at 10.30am-11am and 2pm-2.30pm.

There are also bedtime Bookbug sessions in the evenings over winter, where families can bring pyjamas and blankets to snuggle up and keep cosy.

Gordon said that she had felt “overwhelmed” taking her twins to busy activities after so much time alone in the house during the Covid lockdown.

“Chloe and the team at Shetland Library always made me feel really at ease, and the structure of the sessions, yet the informality to them, was really encouraging,” she said.

“The team at Shetland Library are really fantastic. The space is bright and airy with lovely, coloured cushions and everyone feels relaxed and able to do whatever is needed for them and their family.

“I learnt many of my now favourite children’s stories through attending Bookbug sessions.

“We are so lucky to have such a brilliant service and amazing team delivering Bookbug here in Shetland and it’s been such a massive part of my children growing up.”

With a theme of Bookbug’s big quest, Bookbug week invites little ones to go on a magical adventure through stories and rhymes.
