Sport / Another national call-up for young footballer Lori

A TEENAGER who became the first Shetland girls’ player to represent Scotland last year has been called up to the national team again.

Lori Smith, 15, has been selected to represent the Boys and Girls Clubs of Scotland under-17 girls’ team later this year.

Lori will be among the players donning the jersey in an international tie against Wales in August.

Her local club, Lerwick Rangers, congratulated her on the call-up and wished her all the best for the game.

She was selected from a pool of around 170 players to represent Scotland under-15s girls’ against Wales in Aberystwyth last year.

Lori told Shetland News last year it was a “privilege to play for them”, and that she had been “shocked but very excited” by the call-up.

She was put forward for the Scottish trials by Shetland Girls and Women’s coach Adam Priest along with three other players last year.

Her mother Elaine said that Lori “didn’t look out of place at all”, and “did amazing” in the fixture.

“Her coaches were delighted with how she played. They said the team was not necessarily picked on the best players but on their attitude and effort, and Lori has a great attitude towards the team.

“She’s very much a team player and she was complimented on that. She’s quite a modest player.”

Lori also said last year she was targeting a place in the Scotland under-17 team this year, something she has now achieved.

And she also set her sights on a call-up to the Shetland women’s team for the 2027 Island Games in the Faroe Islands.
