Community / Famous Norwegian comedian among crew of visiting sailing boat
There were a few Norwegian personalities on board the Loyal as visitors celebrated the country’s Constitution Day on Sunday
AN ACTOR and comedian with nearly 250,000 followers on Facebook is not your average Norwegian visitor to Shetland.
But that was the case when Norwegian tall ship Loyal arrived in Lerwick recently.
He might not be very well known to people on this side of the water, but the comedian known as Klypa – real name Thomas Ryste – has been called “one of Norway’s most beloved comedians”.
With some of his YouTube videos gaining more than a million views, Ryste is known for portraying a range of characters.
While in Scalloway on Sunday for a Norwegian Constitution Day event, he was dressed up as one of his many alter-egos – a ferryman with brightly coloured overalls.
He was not the only visitor of note, however, with TV personality Leif Einar ‘Lothepus’ Lothe and Sondre Walsvik among those also on board.
Passengers from the Loyal attended a Constitution Day ceremony at the Shetland Bus memorial in Scalloway before heading over to the village’s museum, with some dressed in traditional clothing.
Although there were emotions on show at the Shetland Bus memorial, it was clear the Norwegian visitors were enjoying themselves during their visit to Shetland.
Plenty of singing and music emanated from the Loyal while berthed at the top of Victoria Pier on Saturday afternoon.
Speaking at the Scalloway Museum as guests enjoyed tea, coffee and a range of rather impressive looking cakes and homebakes, Ryste said he was in Shetland with a group of friends, making some films.
At the event at the memorial there were cameras among the crew, as well as a drone. There is already footage online from Victoria Pier, which can be viewed above.
Ryste said his awareness of Shetland was heightened through seeing the crime drama TV show of the same name, adding that the “landscape is beautiful”.
He said the crew of around 20 on board the Loyal arrived last week and are scheduled to leave today (Monday).
