News / Strachan in Team Scotland
SHETLAND swimmer Andrea Strachan will compete for Scotland in the 50 metres breaststroke at this summer’s Commonwealth Games.
At present she is the only local athlete to have made it into Team Scotland.
The 21 year old currently studies at the University of Edinburgh where she does her swimming training under coach Chris Jones.
Former coach Petur Peturson described the selection as a “massive achievement”.
“For us to know that we can prepare somebody locally to be able to thrive in a university performance programme and then be selected for the national swimming team is incredible.
“She is in the team – she will swim. The hard work, dedication and commitment have paid off,” he said.
The swimming competition at the Glasgow games will get under way on 24 July.
Strachan was one of the stars of Team Shetland at last summer’s NatWest Island Games in Bermuda – winning two gold and three silver medals.
