News / Sporting successes

THERE was a double triumph for Shetland’s sportsmen on Saturday as both the rugby and football teams recorded victories against mainland opposition.

The rugby team came from 10-0 down to beat Aberdeenshire 12-10 in the RBS Caledonia League Division Two North at a muddy Clickimin.

After losing two tries in the first half, Shetland dominated the second period and scored tries through Harry Morton and Luke Cromwell. The latter’s try came late in the game and was converted by Jon Pulley to secure victory for the home side.

Meanwhile their footballing counterparts recorded a 2-0 win against Sutherland United on an artificial pitch at Naver, Thurso.

Andrew Flett opened the scoring by bundling the ball over the line at the back post following a corner, before Leighton Flaws created the second goal for James Johnston.

The game was the quarter final of the Jock Mackay Memorial Cup, and Shetland will now face Golspie Sutherland in the semi finals.
