THE SMALLER of Mareel’s two cinema screens has been out of action in the past couple of weeks due to technical problems with the projection equipment.
But Shetland Arts hopes to have the 37-seat Screen 2, which began suffering “intermittent” issues shortly before Christmas, back up and running by the weekend.
Mareel’s technical team were initially unable to eliminate the problems, which escalated to the extent that on 29 December all planned films for Screen 2 were cancelled and customers were offered a refund.
Shetland Arts marketing officer Lisa Ward said: “Our technical team has been working hard since and we believe we have identified the source of the problem: a routine malfunction in one of the hard drives that requires a replacement part.
“That part was ordered and we expect it to arrive in Shetland tomorrow [Wednesday] for fitting and testing.”
Shetland Arts director Gwilym Gibbons said the “frustrating thing has been that the issue would disappear for a week, so it was impossible to find out what it was.”
Films due to be shown in Screen 2 from 10 January onwards are due to go on sale on Thursday, two days later than normal. Screen 1 films are on sale as normal.
Ward said Shetland Arts would seek to slot in screenings of films which have not been shown in the coming weeks, adding: “We’d like to thank our customers for their patience and support throughout this period.”
