Letters / Frightening
I agree with Geoff McCarron’s comment on these trucks transporting rocks through the south mainland (Birdbrained venture; SN 6/11/13).
It is frightening being in a small car and passing one of these trailers thundering by as you look uneasily up at such massive boulders, especially on the steep incline on the A970 between Sandwick and Cunningsburgh when you become aware of another one approaching in the distance.
It has been non-stop, although a lot of trust and respect must be given to the truck/trailer drivers who cope with Shetland’s own local traffic.
Such loads and even larger ones on one trailer down south would have had a police escort.
The decision not to deliver safely by sea near Sumburgh should have been more clearly thought over, instead of this relentless movement along country roads and through communities.
The roads at some points from Sandwick to Gulberwick had all been resurfaced before these vehicles appeared and this is obviously another issue where thoughts about damage were put aside.
Shetland in general does not have roads wide enough for large vehicles to pass these lorries, so why was there no consideration for buses etc.
It is the system that is wrong.
