Letters / The most addictive drug
Sheriff Mann is “getting fed up with dealing with (drunken) young thugs” and wants to protect the “good people of Lerwick” from anti social behaviour (Drunken thugs face drinking ban; SN 7/3/13).
But it’s not just the youngsters. Many of us older folk have an alcohol problem – causing violence both on the street and in the home.
Shetland, like the mainland, has a big alcohol problem. However, it’s DRUGS that hits the headlines – folk not facing the fact that alcohol is the most addictive drug around.
Many people enjoy a wee drink – and that’s grand. Good company, a bit of a laugh.
But for many one or two drinks isn’t enough – we can’t stop until we’re plastered.
As a recovering alcoholic, who has enjoyed many years of sobriety with the help of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) I still hear these proven self help groups referred to as a cult – whose members have “gone religious”.
All I can say is that I am glad that I wake up in the morning knowing what I said and did the night before. It took me years to face my problem and I’m so glad I did!
