News / Hassan faces prison for knife crime

A LERWICK man who breached his curfew to assault a young woman by presenting a knife at her has been remanded in custody.

Ebrahim Hassan has been held at Inverness prison since his arrest following the incident at a house in the Sandveien area of Lerwick.

Lerwick Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday that the 49 year old was on a curfew having been released early from a two year prison sentence for dealing amphetamine to feed his heroin habit.

Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said he went to the 23 year old woman’s house because he had “some sort of grievance against her” and when she let him in he armed himself with a knife and “presented it closely to her”.

The fiscal said he accepted Hassan was not going to use the knife to inflict injury, but the woman did not know that and was very distressed.

Mr Mackenzie added that Hassan’s wife called the house when the alarm connected to his electronic tag went off and he returned home immediately. On Wednesday Hassan pled guilty to assault.

Sheriff Philip Mann remanded Hassan in custody until 18 April while social work reports are compiled, but he said his criminal record showed he was a violent man and he would definitely receive a jail sentence.
