Two Yell beaches celebrated again for their beauty
TWO BEACHES in Yell have retained their places on a list of the 52 cleanest and most beautiful beaches in Scotland.
West Sandwick and Sands of Breckon have today (Friday) received Scotland’s Beach Awards for 2026 from environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful.
The awards celebrate the achievements of well managed beaches across Scotland, with the coveted flags helping visitors and locals to visit beaches that are being looked after for people and the environment.
It is the 16th year in a row that West Sandwick has been awarded a Scotland’s Beach Award, while Sands of Breckon features for a third consecutive year.
Keep Scotland Beautiful chief executive Barry Fisher thanked all those who work tirelessly to keep all the beaches on the list in pristine condition.
“Scotland’s Beach Awards are the benchmark for quality, celebrating clean, well-managed and sustainable beaches and it is testament to those who look after them that so many have received awards over decades,” he said.
“It is amazing to see the consistency of standards and continuation of award status matters to those who apply year after year, and I’d like to thank all those, in councils and communities, who do so much to protect, maintain and enhance our beaches, protecting the sand and sea for us all to enjoy.
Scotland’s Beach Awards have been managed by Keep Scotland Beautiful for more than 30 years, playing a vital role in protecting beaches and encouraging people to visit them responsibly.
A range of criteria must be met to earn a Scotland’s Beach Award, including beach safety, access and facilities, and cleanliness.
