News / Mackerel sanctions
THE EUROPEAN Commission is expected to propose sanctions against Iceland and Faroe on Wednesday for their huge increase in mackerel fishing over the past two years.
Marathon negotiations last week failed to reach a deal between the EU, Norway, Iceland and Faroe, but fishermen have been told that an offer put before the two countries has been neither rejected or accepted.
Ian Gatt, of the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association, said this is the basis for continuing talks in Reykjavik on 25 January.
“In the meantime, a provisional mackerel quota has been set by the EU and Norway. This is obviously not an ideal solution as it again sees the Scottish industry working under a cloud regarding our final mackerel allocation,” he said.
