News / Sex offender on 12 month curfew

A YOUNG Shetland man who was remanded in custody for his bizarre behaviour at a house in Lerwick has avoided jail, but will be placed under nightly curfew for a year and put on the sex offenders’ register.

Lerwick Sheriff Court heard last month how 24 year old Peter Hall, of 15 Ladies Drive, Lerwick, entered a house on the town’s Sandveien estate uninvited on 27 February this year.

The couple who lived there were next door and called the police after observing Hall through a window rummaging through clothes and masturbating on their bed, before leaving the premises wearing the woman’s clothing.

Hall pled guilty to stealing clothing and photographs, as well as threatening or abusive behaviour and was remanded in custody at Craiginches prison for one month, where he placed under protection and spent 23 hours a day in his cell.

At the time Sheriff Graeme Napier described Hall as a significant danger to the public and made it clear he was considering a prison sentence when he appeared from custody on Wednesday.

However defence agent Tommy Allan argued that it would be safer to sentence him in the community where he could be helped with his issues, while facing the threat of jail if he failed to comply.

Sheriff Napier agreed and imposed a three year community payback order during which Hall will be placed on the sex offenders’ register.

He must also spend the next year staying at home from 7pm until 7am every night and take part in a joint sex offenders’ programme.
