News / Olympic Torch relay in Lerwick
THE OLYMPIC Torch will be carried by 20 local torch bearers in a relay through Lerwick on Sunday 10 June 2012.
During its 70 day long journey in the run-up to the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, the torch will be carried through more than 1,000 communities stretching the whole of the UK.
Shetland Islands Council’s political leader Josie Simpson said: “The arrival of the Olympic Torch represents a real opportunity to highlight Shetland’s strong commitment to sport and to celebrate our many sporting successes.”
The torch will visit Orkney the same day and will be in Stornoway on 11 June. Organisers have not yet released details of how the torch will travel to Shetland and for how many hours it will stay in the isles.
