News / Midnight fire call out to Hillswick hotel
A HISTORIC hotel in the north of Shetland had a scare on Friday night when a carelessly discarded cigarette set off the smoke alarms.
Three fire engines from Brae and Hillswick raced to the 111 year old St Magnus Bay Hotel in Hillswick after the alarm went off at midnight.
However when they arrived they found the only fire damage was to one square foot of flooring in the porch, though there was smoke damage to the porch itself. The fire crews damped the porch down with one hose reel jet.
A spokeswoman for the fire service said that because the hotel was made of wood it would have gone up quickly had a fire taken hold.
“The incident was dealt with very, very quickly. Speed was of the essence,” she said.
