Two visiting vessels to welcome public onboard this weekend
TWO large ships will be opening their doors to the public this weekend.
The Northern Lighthouse Board’s new 70-metre vessel Pole Star will accept visitors while berthed in Scalloway on Saturday and Sunday.
The ship supports the Northern Lighthouse Board’s role in maintaining and managing lighthouses, buoys, and other marine aids to navigation across Scotland and the Isle of Man.
With hybrid propulsion, the vessel is equipped with advanced navigation and communications systems, enabling hydrographic surveys of the seabed.
The ship’s master Alisdair Graham said: “I grew up in Tingwall, and I feel a tremendous sense of pride to be bringing the ship to Shetland.
“Visitors will have an opportunity to meet the crew and find out why this vessel is a step change from what has gone before.”
The ships will be open between 10am and 12pm, and from 1pm to 4pm, on Saturday and Sunday.
Meanwhile the coastguard’s emergency towing vessel will be opening its doors to the public in Lerwick on Sunday.
Ievoli Black will be alongside at Shearer’s Quay near Huw’s Gray, with people able to take a visit onboard between 1pm and 4pm.
Visitors will be able to tour the vessel, talk to the crew and learn how her emergency towage operations and response capability helps to prevent maritime pollution incidents.
She will be in Lerwick as part of her routine northwest Scotland patrol programme.
