Arts / Drever ‘delighted’ to be back for Mareel gig

AWARD-winning singer-songwriter and guitarist Kris Drever is back in the islands as part of the launch tour for new record this weekend.

His fifth full-length solo album Doing This For Love came out last Friday (10 April), and is already garnering critical acclaim.

Drever says it is “always a delight” to return to Shetland, where he lived with his family for several years until 2019, and he is looking forward to presenting the new songs at Mareel tonight (Friday).

“I’m going to be doing at least three quarters of the new record, with a smattering of old favourites,” he said.

Drever describes his one-man live show as “ever-evolving”, currently incorporating an array of loops and effects as he finds “ways to manipulate the amount of dynamics available to you, so the big bits sound like more than one person”.

“This is show 11 of 18 and they’ve all been really good,” the seasoned Orcadian, whose renowned debut album Black Water turns 20 this year, continued.

“Year-on-year my shows seem to attract more people and it’s a very solid relationship between me and my concert-going fans.”

He adds: “I’m really looking forward to coming to Shetland, and I’ve got a big bag of Lego to drop off at [mother-in-law] Rita’s.”

Opening most of the shows on this tour, including the Lerwick date, is talented American singer Annie Dressner, now based in Cambridge (the UK one).

“I’m a singer-songwriter from New York City and write from the heart,” she said. “I try to write relatable stories that I hope resonate with audiences.

“And I’m super excited to try and find orcas with Orca Watch!”

Drever described Dressner as “brilliant – she is funny, engaging, she’s a great songwriter, and it’s worth going to see her because it’s not that often you get to see someone from Manhattan milling about in a place like Lerwick!”

You can get tickets to see Kris Drever, supported by Annie Dressner, live at Mareel tonight from Shetland Arts Box Office.
