Police / ‘True professional’ police constable given long service medal
LOCAL police constable Carole Smith has been awarded her long service and good conduct medal in recognition of 20 years dedicated service to policing in Shetland.
Having spent her entire career serving the Shetland community, Smith has become a familiar and respected figure across the islands.
She lives in Burra with her husband and son, balancing her professional duties with family life.
Last week she was joined by her family at Lerwick Police Station, where assistant chief constable Emma Bond presented her with the prestigious award.
Shetland area commander Chris Sewell said the ceremony celebrated Smith’s “commitment, professionalism and the positive impact she has had on the Shetland community throughout her career”.
Bond praised Smith’s dedication, noting that her long-standing service exemplifies the highest standards of policing and community engagement.
Sewell described her as a “true professional whose hard work and commitment to Shetland have made a real difference to these islands”.
Meanwhile Bond, who holds responsibility for local policing in the north and leads on Police Scotland’s work tackling violence against women and girls, undertook a number of engagements on her visit to Shetland last week.
During her visit she toured SaxaVord Spaceport and met with local procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie, to discuss matters relating to criminal justice in the islands.
Bond also met with councillor Allison Duncan, chair of the community safety and resilience board.
Sewell said: “It was a real privilege to welcome ACC Emma Bond back to Shetland.
“Her visit provided an excellent opportunity to highlight the excellent partnership working ongoing locally to keep people safe in Shetland.”
