COUNCIL roads staff will begin work this Sunday to resurface the mini roundabout at the crossroads near Herrislea, Veensgarth – with drivers asked to avoid the area if possible.
The top surface of the road will be removed in sections before resurfacing work takes place next week.
The council said that while work takes place access to nearby properties will be maintained. Some short delays may be expected, and diversionary routes will be available.
LOCAL writer Jen Stout has landed more acclaim after her award-winning book Night Train to Odesa was longlisted for the Royal Society of Literature’s Ondaatje Prize.
The prize is an annual award of £10,000 for a distinguished work of fiction, non-fiction or poetry, evoking the spirit of a place.
A shortlist will be announced on 28 April, with the winner then revealed in May.
SHETLAND Arts is seeing new trustees to help guide the organisation’s strategic direction.
Trustees serve a three-year term and meet six times a year for formal board meetings, with additional informal meetings throughout the year. Shetland Arts said new trustees receive a full induction and ongoing support.

THE FORMER Laing’s pharmacy premises in the centre of Lerwick is now up for sale.
The vacant building is located at the heart of town at the Market Cross and includes ground and first floors.
THE FULL line-up for the upcoming Boppapalooza festival has been released – with live original music set to take place across three venues on one day.
The festival, organised by The Bop Shop, will be held on Saturday 24 May.
The event is starting off with a free-entry, all ages concert in the Mareel cafe/bar between 12pm and 4pm with acts such as Sauerkraut Seth and the Sheds, Magic Money Tree Band and Keirynn Topp on the bill.

From mid-afternoon to early evening there will also be a free-entry gig for rockers in Trench, with acts like Ten Tonne Dozer and Grimlok set to play.
The festival will conclude with a ticketed standing event in the Mareel auditorium, with Glasgow funk and soul group Tom McGuire and the Brassholes headlining with a supporting cast of acts including The Fiction, The Dirty Lemons and Sheer.
AN EVENT is taking place at Mareel in Lerwick between 10am and 4pm next Friday (11 April) to give people more information on the impending switch to a digital telephone network.
BT said it is hosting similar events across the country, where it will explain what its home phone service Digital Voice is and what it means for customers.
Landlines in the UK are set to change from analogue to digital in 2027.
LOGANAIR has opened up bookings on its winter schedule, which runs between October 2025 and March 2026.
The winter schedule provides customers with the opportunity to book advance tickets on a range of new and existing routes.
Loganair’s chief commercial officer Luke Lovegrove said: “Many of our customers book flights for important dates months in advance – including Christmas – which is why we release our winter schedule early in the year to ensure people can plan for these dates and secure their travel as far in advance as they want.”
SHETLAND saxophone player Norman Willmore will head to Germany for an international jazz event, thanks to support from Creative Scotland.
He will perform alongside Corrie Dick at a jazzahead! showcase event in Bremen later this month.
Creative Scotland head of music Alan Morrison said the jazzahead! event has become a “major gateway for Scotland’s jazz sector to reach international markets, promoters and fellow musicians” in recent years.
