Weather / New weather warning for snow and ice

Snow on a beach.... West Voe, Sumburgh, between blizzards (Chris Smith)

A YELLOW weather warning for snow and ice has been extended for Shetland until tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

The Met Office provided an updated warning for the isles from 4am on New Year’s Day until 10am on 2 January.

It said snow showers are likely today, continuing overnight and through to tomorrow morning.

Around 1-3cm of snowfall is likely at low levels, the Met Office said, with 5-10cm possible at areas above 300m, “leading to difficult driving conditions and some travel disruption”.

“Sleet is more likely along windward coasts at times, leading to ice formation on untreated surfaces overnight,” it added.
