Health / Flaws ‘really surprised’ at nomination for top national award

A SENIOR member of the NHS Shetland team is in the running to win a national health award.

Lucy Flaws (right) is in the running for a top award.

Lucy Flaws, who is head of planning at NHS Shetland, has been nominated for the Leader of the Year award at Scotland’s Health Awards 2024.

Flaws said she was “really surprised and delighted” to find out she was up for the accolade.

“I’m lucky to be surrounded by many excellent, supportive people who I learn a huge amount from every day,” she said.

“I’ve had the great privilege of working with patients in my previous roles and the experience I’ve gained there from the people I’ve met from all walks of life has really shaped how I approach things now.

“I’ve gained so much from Shetland over the years, I hope I am adding something useful back into services and communities.”

Flaws will find out if she is a winner at the awards ceremony in Edinburgh on 7 November.

Meanwhile NHS Shetland has released a video showing the full process of going for an MRI scan at its new Helyer suite at the Gilbert Bain Hospital.

The video shows patients what to expect when they go in for a scan, from the front door of the hospital right through to the scan itself.

Patients are given earplugs, headphones and an emergency buzzer as they enter the scanner.

An event held last week to celebrate fundraisers who helped NHS Shetland to secure the MRI scanner heard positive feedback from patients who had used the facility.

One described it as a “dream”, while another said it “felt like going to a spa”.
