Community / ‘Weemin in black’ vigil at St Ninian’s

A ‘WEEMIN in Black’ vigil has held on the St Ninian’s Isle sands on Sunday afternoon in a show of solidarity for “all people suffering as a consequence of the violence in Palestine and Israel”.

The participants also called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and the release of all hostages.

The Women in Black movement started in Jerusalem in 1998, when a group of Israeli women, wearing black, stood in public places to protest against their government’s occupation of Palestine during the first intifada.

The movement has since become a global movement of women standing against armed conflict and calling for justice and peace, in a variety of contexts throughout the world.

Sunday’s event was Shetland’s first Weemin in Black vigil, and it was organised by Palestinian Solidarity Shetland.

The group continue to hold weekly demonstrations on Saturdays outside Lerwick Town Hall.
